The American Patriot, one of the newest cruise ships operating on the Great Lakes, entered service in 2025 and began her first Great Lakes cruising season in 2026.
The 243-foot-long, 56-foot-wide vessel is owned by American Cruise Lines, based in Guilford, Connecticut. She accommodates 130 passengers and is the first vessel in the company’s new Patriot-class fleet of small cruise ships.
Built by Chesapeake Shipbuilding in Salisbury, Maryland, the American Patriot was designed for domestic coastal cruising, combining the amenities of larger cruise ships with the ability to enter smaller harbors and ports.
The ship made her inaugural voyage on June 21, 2025, departing Boston, Massachusetts, on a 15-day New England cruise. She was officially christened in Newport, Rhode Island, during the Fourth of July holiday weekend. Her godmother is Susan Daly, president of Sail Newport, a nonprofit public sailing center.
The American Patriot is one of several new vessels built as part of American Cruise Lines’ fleet expansion. Her sister ships include the American Pioneer, American Maverick and American Ranger.
The vessel has four passenger decks and features private balconies for every stateroom, including single accommodations and larger suites. The upper deck includes a lounge, walking track and outdoor observation areas. Other amenities include a dining room, casual café, chart room, fitness center and elevators connecting the decks.
The ship is also equipped with stabilizers to reduce rolling in rough water, an important feature for passenger comfort when crossing the open waters of the Great Lakes.
Unlike most cruise ships operating on the Great Lakes, which are foreign-flagged and travel between American and Canadian ports, the American Patriot is U.S.-built, U.S.-flagged and U.S.-crewed. Her itineraries operate entirely between ports in the United States, eliminating the need for passengers to carry passports or clear an international border during their cruises.
The company’s entry into the Great Lakes market in 2026 introduced three itineraries. A nine-day Lake Michigan and Upper Peninsula cruise operated round-trip from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, while another nine-day itinerary explored Lake Ontario, Lake Erie and the Thousand Islands region. A longer, 14-day voyage connected Buffalo, New York, and Milwaukee, traveling through lakes Erie, Huron and Michigan.
Ports of call included Detroit, Alpena, Sault Ste. Marie, Mackinac Island, Muskegon, Ludington and other communities throughout the region.
The ship’s relatively small size allows her to dock in locations that larger cruise vessels cannot easily access. Rather than requiring major passenger terminals, she can use certain municipal waterfronts, smaller commercial docks and other suitable facilities.
The American Patriot is scheduled to return to the Great Lakes in 2027, continuing American Cruise Lines’ expansion into a market that has attracted increasing numbers of small passenger vessels in recent years.
With her American construction, domestic itineraries and ability to visit smaller Great Lakes ports, the American Patriot offers passengers a different way to experience the inland seas.
