A Trip on the SS Wilfred Sykes

5 days aboard a classic Great Lakes steamer

By Rob Alway

In early October I spent five days aboard the SS Wilfred Sykes. I met the ship at Port Dolomite near Cedarville, Michigan along northern Lake Huron where it was receiving a half load of dolomite limestone. We then traveled to Port Inland near Gulliver, Michigan along northern Lake Michigan for high-calcium limestone. Then, we headed down Lake Michigan to Burns Harbor, Indiana where the limestone was unloaded at the steel mill. After unloaded, we headed back to Port Dolomite. You can read about the journey in an 11-part series on this substack.
